CrowdStrike-Microsoft-Blue Screen of Death – Tech Edu Space
A major IT outage affected almost all the work computers around the globe including Asia, Australia, and the USA as the computers stopped working while showing the blue error screen, also known as the Blue Screen of Death.
The cause
is reported to be due to a faulty update caused by the cyber-security firm CrowdStrike. It has admitted that the tech failure was caused by an update done to the
antivirus software, which in turn is designed to protect Microsoft Windows from
malicious attacks.

It’s the
same CrowdStrike with a Super Bowl commercial displayed this year.
Due to the
outrage, public places such as banks, airports, stock exchanges, and
hospitals all around the world rely on Microsoft Windows software for day-to-day tasks. There were long queues in the airports and delayed tests and
other emergency routines in hospitals which led to confusion and resentments in
the public. This also needs to be noted that this is not a cyber-attack but a technical
fault from the company.
The Problem
According to
the reports, it has been said that the bug in the faulty update has affected
the kernel of the computer system, prompting the computers to repeatedly boot
and show a blue screen.
Also, this fault
has only seemed to have affected the work computers rather than the personal computers.
CrowdStrike
boss Geroge Kurtz has admitted the situation and said the issues are only caused
in Windows PCs and no other operating systems. He also added that the issue has
been identified and a fix has been deployed.
The Solution
The
Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) had advised to try the classic method
of turning off the systems and back on – in some cases up to 15 times. This
would try to auto download the fix and the computers would be back to function.
The other way
includes manually booting Windows to the safe mode or the Windows Recovery Mode
and then deleting the update from the CrowdStrike directory.
Follow the
path: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike directory and delete the
file “C-00000291”.
Lastly, boot the host normally.
Reactions
Short videos were floating around as netizens were able to relate the situation that happened in the movie “The Cloverfield Paradox”, a similar situation where the space
station’s systems start malfunctioning due to an error caused by the Windows operating
system.
Adding to
it, memes and hashtags were trending on X such as #MicrosoftOutage, #Linux, and other alternatives of Windows software.
There were
questions raised due to the outage, regarding our dependance on one single entity
for the tasks all around the world.
